History of France Rugs: About Indian rugs: India is the land known for its rich heritage and culture, the art of weaving rugs was introduced in the country by Akbar, the dynamic ruler of the Mogal dynasty. During his reign art and craft had a tremendous growth; his admiration to Safavid art of Persian made him to bring the Persian weaver to enhance the style and technique of Indian carpets. He took initiatives to establish workshops in cities like Agra, Fatehpur, Sikri, Jaipur & Lahore. The carpets had a prominent place in decorating palaces of Mogal dynasty; the art of carpet making started to decline, when the mogal dynasty lost its power during 18th Century.

During the reign of British Empire in 19th century, revolutionary changes occurred; Indian carpets were succeeded in carpet trade and remarkable growth in export to US. In 1970’s their was great demand for Persian tradition design rugs and the requirement was fulfilled by Indian rug industry by producing rugs of the best qualities featuring Aubusson and Chinese design motifs.

The technique and style imitated by the Indian rugs are mainly of Persian pattern. The fine quality wool from Kashmir, silk, gold and silver threads are the materials used and asymmetrical knots are adapted in making of the rugs.

In 17th and 18th century the safavid design – palmettes, herati of Persian style was in vogue. The aspect of herati carpet were categories in to two groups by giving prominence to palettes and levels with intense color and using pale outlines or without outline. All these features are integrated in Indian rugs to attribute an indo-Persian style.

Since, middle of 20th Century the Indian rugs had European, Chinese, Turkoman and Persian design like Kashan, Tabriz, Kerman, Sarouk, Bijar in the style & patterns. These designs are mainly found in the rugs produced from Jaipur, Agra and Kashmir.

Dhurries and Indo-mir are the type of rugs with handcrafted flat weaves merging the traditional and contemporary pattern, Dhurries design resembles Navajos and it is popular in west. Jaipur the city famous for its art, craft and culture, is an important centre in producing rugs. The art of rug weaving reached Jaipur, during the reign of Mongal dynasty.

The material used for foundation is cotton and it use 160 Persian knots per square inch. The Rugs of Jaipur are known for its magnificent design as it includes Traditional Caucasian and Persian medallion and corner design, but Jaipur knot is best satisfied with Caucasian design than Persian curvilinear design.

Jaipur rugs are available in a wide range of sizes and shapes, including runners and large size carpets; they are of finer quality and lasting durability. Previously the pattern and design of the rugs were inspired by the Persian style. Now, there are drastic changes in style and design.

Silk and wool are the main material used in the production of Jaipur rugs. The designs of the rugs are geometric and mostly floral motif.

Agra rugs

Agra city renowned for its historical importance was once, the capital city of Mogal dynasty and was influenced to the art of rug weaving. The Persian style had immense inspiration on Agra rug and this is well expressed on the rugs, produced during 16th to 18th century. The late 19th century rugs were produced using silk or wool commissioned by British entrepreneurs.

Agra rugs are famous for its beauty of color, elegance of drawing and fineness in knotting; structurally they have a cotton foundation & doubling wefted. It uses the asymmetrical knot. In Agra rugs the basic colors used are mainly red, yellow, green and ivory. Floral tendrils, angular vines and stars are the design highlighted in these rugs. These rugs have a great visual impact as it captures the beauty of nature in its design with sophisticated pattern.
